Tracking IH Symptom Severity: IHSS

Idiopathic Hypersomnia Severity Scale

The is a brief, validated, 14-question, patient-reported assessment covering IH symptoms. Some evaluation examples include1,2:

  • Sleep inertia

    Finding it extremely difficult or even impossible to wake in the morning without several alarm calls or the help of someone else.

  • Impaired daytime alertness

    Hypersomnolence that impacts general health, intellectual functioning, mood, performing daily tasks properly, including driving a car.

  • Prolonged and unrefreshing daytime and nighttime sleep

    Feeling that you have not had enough sleep when required to get up at a particular time.

  • All 14 questions are on a scale of 0 to 3 or 0 to 4, totaling up to 50 points1
  • The higher the score, the more severe/frequent the symptoms1
Score of 0 to 12 is mild, score of 13 to 25 is moderate, score of 26 to 38 is severe, score of 39 to 50 is very severeScore of 0 to 12 is mild, score of 13 to 25 is moderate, score of 26 to 38 is severe, score of 39 to 50 is very severe
  • For the score, the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) is 4 points3
